Fat Man's Pass

Learning new tricks

Sniffing Robyn's shirt

Eric is heading back to school this week. It was great having him around. We had a nice time playing games, hanging out, and on Saturday morning we went on a hike at South Mountain. We took the Mormon trail to Fat Man's Pass. Robert started out with us, but he needed to be on a meeting and had forgotten his phone. So he went back to the car and spent the morning on a call while Eric and I finished the hike.

We are not sure what is going on with Grandpa's feet, especially his left one. It is so swollen, and nothing seems to help reduce it. The nurse (and the internet) said that it just happens with old age sometimes. I'm not sure how much time Grandpa has left. According to what I've read, he could be close to the end, or he could go on like this for months and possibly years!

His sleep this week was all messed up. He kept Grammy up most of the night one night, and on Friday night he came into our room about four times in less than three hours. I finally gave up taking him back to bed and took him out to the family room to sit in the chair next to him. We were in there from about 12:00 to 4:00am. I don't think he ever got a good sleep going that night. The next morning I asked him how his sleep was and he said it was good. Ha!

I was in charge of him on Saturday for awhile. At one point in the day, he got up and left the room. I thought he was going to the bathroom, but soon after he left, we heard the doorbell ring. Of course it was Grandpa outside doing who knows what. He told Robert he was heading home. I went out there with him for a little bit. It was boiling hot, probably around 110 degrees. He told me he needed to go somewhere. We got about three steps down the sidewalk, and I turned him around to look at the house. I asked him if it looked familiar to him. He said sort of. I suggested we try going inside to see if it's cooler in there. Luckily he agreed. He then shuffled and farted his way back inside.

Quotes...

Eric as Grandpa was exiting the bathroom: Oh hey, Grandpa! How's it going?

Grandpa: Things turned out really well.

Addi: How's it going, Grandpa?

Grandpa: Good, but these men *points* keep fighting me.

Addi: That's the TV. They aren't actually here.

Grandpa: What the hell?

Grammy: Well, Grandpa. Do you wanna watch Eric? He's not very exciting. He just sits behind the computer with his nose to the grindstone.

While having a discussion about random things Sunday morning...

Grandpa: Do you go church?

Me: Not very often. Do you?

Grandpa: I think I've been there once.

While talking about the temple:

Grandpa: I need to take a test.

Me: At the temple?

Grandpa: Yes

Me: Have you been there before?

Grandpa: No

Eric's home for a visit

 Quick update:

Eric is home for a visit. He will be here for a little over a week.
Mia started school.
Haley has a new client.
Sam is in a book club. (This might not be new information, but it's new to me.)
Max disappeared.
Quinny is learning new dives.
Dax is cutting a new tooth.
Devin started work in WV and already had a week off.
Robyn loves having a home gym and a new, big kitchen.
Robert's back is hurting in a different spot now. He also got a new grill that he spent most of yesterday seasoning.
Grammy is going to die of heatstroke and/or exhaustion one of these days.
Grandpa speaks mostly gibberish.
I started a new puzzle.

Eric was singing (very loudly) to Grandpa last night. Grandpa was unimpressed.

Grandpa continues to surprise me. He got on the floor again. The one eye open is super creepy.

Quinny always gets Grandpa to smile.

Grandpa kept pointing the remote at me. I'm not sure what he thought it was going to do.

The tie was killing me!

Thursday was Mimi's first day of 14th grade. She's living with us this year. She is taking 19 credit hours this semester.

Quotes...

Grandpa talking about my shoes: I thought you were very naive. Think they're second.

Grandpa: The mouth comes out of the mouth.

Grammy: I was the only Carma in town until another little girl was named after me.
Grandpa:  Who is that for goodness sake?

Grammy: I'm surprised you still have hair.
Grandpa: It's quite nice, isn't it?
Grammy: I could make pillow with all of your hair.

Mia: Your son-in-law is a doctor. He's an anesthesiologist.
Grandpa:  He's my husband.

Grandpa on the Floor

I found Grandpa on the floor twice in the past couple of weeks. Needless to say, it's shocking. The first time was in by the tv. I seriously thought he was dead at first. I was so relieved to find out he was there on purpose. I never did find out why he got on the floor.

The second time I found him, he was just hanging out on the steps reading the paper. Considering that he can barely stand up on his own half the time, I was amazed he had purposely gotten down on the ground.

Grammy said that he shocked her the other day as well. She had gone down stairs to exercise, and about 5 minutes after leaving him to take a nap in the chair, she turned around and he had made it all the way down the stairs and onto the ground. She asked him what he was doing, and he said he was exercising, haha! He hasn't exercised in ages!

Grandpa told me the other day that his cane was broken. He even handed it to me and said, "Here, you try it!' I could not, for the life of me, figure out what he was talking about. Turns out, he thought his cane was a vacuum.

Grandpa also decided to get out Grammy's journal from 1994 to read. Luckily, he can't read her writing, so we only looked at the pictures she added.

While looking at photos, Grandpa saw this one and said, "He has good teeth."

This is the first week that I asked Grandpa if he knew who I was. He said I looked familiar, but he didn't say my name. He calls Grammy Karen every now and then.

Gorgeous sky the other night.

Quotes...

Grammy: What do you want to do the rest of the evening?
Grandpa: Talk about football.
(Note: Grandpa never talks about football, haha. He doesn't even want to watch it.)

Grandpa looking at old pictures: They love me!

Grandpa: Hi, Barbara! It's me, Rich!

Grammy talking to Grandpa: Don't take your pants off. You'll be indecent!
Grandpa: I will zip you.

Mia's home!

Mia got home this week!! She spent a couple of months this summer in France. She worked as a nanny for a family there.
They were so kind to her and made her feel so welcome.

This is a pic Robyn sent of some turkeys in their backyard.

Grandpa had a rough couple of days this week. I honestly thought he wasn't going to make it. He was vomiting and had diarrhea. He managed to pull through and is doing much better as of today. He is still very confused and doesn't understand why we are living with them. Here he is last Sunday with Bob and Grammy. Bob comes over quite often and spends time with old folks.

I'm working with Anne again this year in junior high. We have a few math classes and one social skills class. Here are a couple of my favorite mottos the kids wrote on the first day of school.

Quotes...

Shelle while talking about something that happened on April 1st: April 1st no fools joke.

Grammy while looking at some nature pictures on YouTube: That looks like black water, so they named it black lake. (Haha, no, they didn't.)

Me: Grandpa, do you want to stand up?
Grandpa: Scorpion
